Automated signal performance metrics show real-time and historical functionality at signalized intersections. This allows traffic engineers to measure what they previously could only model. Accurate decision-making about signal performance and timing helps signal management personnel identify vehicle and pedestrian detector malfunctions. This cost effective solution also measures vehicle delay and the volume, speeds and travel time of vehicles. Your agency can use these metrics to identify operational deficiencies, optimizing mobility and helping manage traffic signal timing and maintenance. The software developed by UDOT has been shared freely with multiple agencies and companies around the country. Several cities and DOTs, including a few in Canada, have shown interest in it. Currently, five locations are using SPMs and at least four are in the process of implementing the system.
